An ART BIBLE, also known as a Pitch Bible or a Style Guide (depending on the deliverable) is a document which outlines the overall artistic direction and concept of the final outcome. The purpose of an Art Bible is to describe what the final film is going to visually look like while helping the art team understand the art direction (Telang, 2013, p.6). It maintains consistency throughout the whole project, while explaining “how and why stylistic decisions were made” (Telang, 2013, p.6). Furthermore, it will aid in the marketing and communication purposes within and outside the team (Dunaim, 2017, p.1).

(Telang, 2013, p.7)

Things to be included in an ART BIBLE:

  • Art Style

  • Character Art

  • Color Palette

  • CameraMood & Tone

  • Technical Guidelines

  • References

ART STYLE

Due to our film being in VR, we will keep the scale of our environments small enough to be viewed in 360 but with high poly detail in each asset as LOD doesn’t apply to our case. For the outdoor scenes, we will fake the vastness of the scene through custom painted HDRIs and lighting effects. We will also be implementing a stylized and disproportionate look to our environments. This is in order to keep in line with the Alice In Wonderland (1951) story where she shrinks in a fantasy world with tall mushrooms. The living room assets will also have a disproportional look as we want the viewer to feel “shrunk”. The stylized and warped proportions of the furniture will also contribute to this concept. The character, on the other hand, will have mix of stylized and realistic look. Once again, our aim is to make the style seem ‘non-sensical’ and ‘out of place’.

CHARACTER ART

The character, apart from the first person VR, will be the MAD HATTER, while the Cheshire Cat’s voice(s) will drive the story forward. The Mad Hatter will have three expressions that will pop out of the ground in the forest scene to scare the viewer, and a final expression with his mouth open in the rollercoaster scene that ends the animation sequence. It will be the climax of the film. Hence, a facial rig will have to be implemented. The textures decided and approved is the “IT” look as it is more appealing.

COLOUR PALETTE

Our most prominent color palette will be purple and blue hues because of the Cheshire Cat’s drive through the story. It is also a color that calms a person down which adds great value to our concept being a “lucid dream”. We studied the color palette to ensure we make right decisions in color theory and combinations for our environments. The retro world will have a dominant purple look and feel. The Living room will mainly be warm and dark horror tones. The cards room will be bright warm and golden to introduce a sense of royalty to the story - as the cards room is an Art Gallery of the Red and White Queens. The creepy forest will once again be dark and cool colors, mainly purple and teal. The rollercoaster environment will be pinkish yellow to give a sunset/sunrise feel. The final bedroom is mainly green in order to give the idea that reality is ‘disgusting’ and ‘boring’, a stark contrast to the dream world.
