CAMERA
In a VR film, the camera work is a little different. From my research, the camera should be placed in the middle while the render settings should be set as a Spherical render with an override FOV of 360. This will ensure that it renders a 360 panorama. Moreover, the ZDepth pass will have to be experimented with due to this being a new type of film. The rule of thirds will not apply to our case as the viewer will be looking around, however, the placement of assets can allow for better compositioning and staging.
Also, as the camera acts as the first person narrative, our story and animatic went through a series of feedback and refinements. The “timing and pacing” of the shots are very important. One of the feedback we received was that the shots were too fast. We needed to test and experiment how the timing and pacing of the shots should be structured based on how long it takes the brain to settle into a new environment. In order to do that, we were advised to blind fold ourselves and walk into an unknown room after taking the blindfold off. Through this experiment, we needed to gauge the time it takes for our brains to take in the surrounding environment. We took this feedback into consideration and added around 7 to 10 seconds of pauses between the transitions into new rooms. These changes are evident in our animatic, which went through a series of refinements and adjustments.
MOOD & TONE
We decided on the mood and tone to be visually appealing with a slight touch of trippy - just so that it doesn’t make the viewer feel too nauseous. Our genre is ‘horror’ and ‘dark fantasy’, so we wanted a right balance of visuals and audio. I had to scout for sufficient audio collaborators from the start of the trimester to ensure we get the right type of tracks that set the mood and tone for each room as they will be stylistically different but composed of one final theme. Here are the moodboards for each scene along with a break-down and run-through of the scene flow.

(Moodboards with color palette for each scene and references images, collected and compiled by me)
TECHNICAL GUIDELINES
Our VR film will definitely have a lot of technicalities from the ideation until the final output. From my research of how to construct VR environment in 3Ds max, VRAY, After Effects and Premiere Pro, I will have to test my flexibility and adaptability through the trimester with this. Constant tests will have to be done using the VR headset. Moreover, due to us having a couple of environments, we were advised to film the last scene in 360 just this week. It was a great idea, so my team and I were considering to pitch in money to invest in a 360 degree camera rather than renting.
REFERENCES
Moodboards and reference images were collected from day one. These helped us structure and define our overall idea. These real world examples will enable us to hold a benchmark for the final output. Most of the illustrations were done by Dalia from the team as she had better skill in illustrating ideas for objects, while I concepted overall sketchy feels for the environments. This allowed us to maintain consistency in the creation of our Art Bible.
