Mediated Violence being the topic we are working towards for the Creative media project has so far been one of the most intriguing topics of the CIU211 class. It is a topic I strongly relate with and possess opinions on because of my experiences and observations of the people around me, and even myself!
Pre-Class
While researching on the topic for the creative media project, I found a lot of ideas discussed in the online lecture to be very fascinating. Things such as Catharsis, Ethics and Violent Media content, and THE AESTHETICISATION OF VIOLENCE made it very interesting to learn about. This line in the lesson stated below latched onto me the most:
Bloom (2010) argues that we make up imaginary horrors to prepare us for real ones much like a flight simulator prepares a pilot for flight. “It’s not that we enjoy zombie films because we need to prepare for the zombie uprising … the theme of zombies is a clever way to frame stories about being attacked by strangers and betrayed by those we love.”
During Class
A lot more insight was shared during our in-class session (honestly, every session is so insightful, it just gets better and better every week!). Mostly, students spoke up about the effects of ethics and violent media in gaming. Although I'm not a gamer, I could relate to most of it. I recall Joshua saying this:
Gaming in my eyes is always a way of escapism. Like I don't think games cause these issues. The people playing it have mental issues that should be carefully taken care of before playing a gaming. If they would watch a movie that had violence (the person who is mentally ill) would try to imitate it. Whereas if that issue is caught and treated, for example, it would be a different story. Its a lack of attention i think to the child that could lead it to this issue.
I do fully agree with this because its not the media content that causes a person to commit crimes, its their psychological mindset that drives them to 'trying it out'. To add to this, I just wanted to say how impressed I was at all of the presentations done this class. Some that stood out to me were Naya's and Mayur's (not because they are my teammates ahaha).
Mayur's presentation
I was immediately drawn into this presentation primarily because of the mention of Lucifer, but also because of his take on binary opposition. The binary opposition of good versus evil was dominantly portrayed in this show and it was a great idea they implemented in relation to the Ying Yang concept and religion. Coming from a religious person, I would say that this show made me strengthen my faith more by making me question what really is good and evil.
Naya's Presentation
Naya's infographic video was not just aesthetic to watch but it had such good content and resources that it made the whole visual/auditory experience worth the ten minutes. I remember a quote from her presentation:
"If any human act evokes the aesthetic experience of the sublime, certainly it is the act of murder... If murder can be experienced aesthetically, the murderer can in turn be regarded as a kind of artist - a performance artist or anti-artist whose specialty is not creation but destruction."
Post Class
I particularly found this to be an interesting take on what the art of psychology is. It reminded me of a show I've recently been so obsessed with called Strangers from Hell/Hell is Other People (2019) which is a Korean TV series in the genre of Psychological Thrillers.
(Kim, Kwon & Lee, 2019)
The whole show was exceptional from the way it tackles mental health to studying the mind of a Psychopath. However there was a line said by the actor "you are the best masterpiece I ever created" which came to mind when I heard this quote. To explain further into its context, this line was said by the psychopath to the protagonist who was being trained to become a psychopath just like himself. He put him through a series of pain and struggle, very meticulously, in order to see him break loose. In the final episode where the protagonist actually does, in fact, become a monster like him, the line was said to him. This makes me realize how the psycho considers killing people as a form of art. His act of bringing out the monster in an innocent person was his way of celebrating "destructive art".
Pitch Presentation
This was the week we conducted our pitch presentation in our individual google meets rooms. Our lecturer was very impressed with what we have in store for him, as we prepared a presentation with subtle hints and teasers of what the whole thing would look like. I'm super excited for how this will turn out. Below is the presentation copy.
In overall, I will be completing the VFX edits by today and compiling the whole video into one. I am in charge of adding all the fancy stuff such as effects and transitions and we should be ready to present next week!
Stay tuned...
